Sollatek Scores Victory Against Counterfeit Operations in Kenya

Sollatek, has scored a win in the fight against counterfeit products. Last week, Kenyan authorities seized and destroyed over 7,000 pieces of fake Sollatek products with an estimated value of 40 million Kenyan shillings (£244,400 GBP, $308,880 USD).

This event was triggered by a surge in public complaints about substandard electronics flooding the Kenyan market. Consumers, alarmed by the poor quality of these devices, voiced their concerns to the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA). The ACA, acting on these reports, launched an investigation.

The investigation revealed a trend at Kenyan ports of entry. Informants alerted authorities to improperly packaged or completely unpackaged Sollatek products, including FridgeGuards, TVGuards, AVS13, AVS30, and AVS3P-0 units. A closer inspection confirmed the products to be counterfeits. Extensive monitoring at the Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu ports revealed they had the most activity.

The largest hauls originated from wholesalers in Eastleigh and Nyamakima areas of Nairobi. The seized counterfeit goods were taken to ACA-designated destruction sites, where they were crushed and incinerated.

Wholesalers previously involved in selling fakes have switched to offering genuine Sollatek products and other legitimate brands. This shift highlights the importance of consumer vigilance and the impact of focused enforcement efforts.

However, the battle against counterfeit products is far from over. Cheaper production costs continue to incentivise the creation of fake products. This is a critical concern, as these counterfeits often lack proper safety features and electrical wiring. When put to the test against power fluctuations, they can malfunction and pose serious fire hazards.

To combat this ongoing threat, the ACA has implemented a Recordation program, which helps legitimate businesses protect their brands. The rise of “look-alike” products, designed to mimic genuine Sollatek devices, further emphasises the need for consumer awareness.
